Roger Ling, who has died aged 82, was Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology at the University of Manchester and was best known for his work with John Ward-Perkins and others on the Pompeian “insula”, or city block, containing the famous House of Menander, which has led to the publication by Oxford University Press of four impressive volumes of a projected five-volume series.
